Steady trade for Desi and Kabuli chickpeas; weak demand for peas

Toronto. Trading activity for small-seeded Kabuli chickpeas and Desi chickpeas remained satisfactory in the global market last week, resulting in stable prices without significant volatility. Chickpea sowing is currently underway in several countries, including Canada and Australia; however, the pace is sluggish in Canada and notably slow in Australia.

A clearer picture regarding chickpea sowing is expected to emerge from upcoming reports by Canada's government agency, StatsCan, and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). StatsCan's forthcoming report is likely to present estimated sowing figures as of June 30. Notably, a sharp decline in chickpea acreage and production is anticipated in Australia this season, which has alleviated market pressure.

As for peas, trading has slowed down as buyers shift their focus to the upcoming new crop. China is importing peas from Russia and Canada, while the pace of chickpea and yellow pea imports into India remains slow. Pea sowing is nearing completion in both Canada and the US, with 95 percent of the work finished in Canada and 82 percent in the US.
