About 84 lakh tonnes of mustard is estimated to be crushed in eight months

Jaipur. While the high domestic market price encouraged farmers to unload more and more stock of their mustard in wholesale markets, the millers did not face difficulty in increasing the speed of its crushing-processing due to the price of mustard oil and cake being at a profitable level.

Data compiled by Anil Chatar, Managing Director of Marudhar Trading Agency, a popular and reliable establishment located in the grain market of Chandpole, Jaipur (Rajasthan),

shows that about 84 lakh tonnes of mustard was crushed in the country during the first eight months of the current Rabi marketing season i.e. March-October 2024. Under this,

it is estimated that 13 lakh tonnes of mustard will be crushed in March, 12.50 lakh tonnes in April, 10 lakh tonnes each in May and June, 9 lakh tonnes in July, 10 lakh tonnes in August, 9.50 lakh tonnes in September and 10 lakh tonnes in October.

According to the agency report, during the period under review, a total of 95 lakh tonnes of mustard arrived in the mandis of major producing states and at government procurement centres.

Out of this, 20 lakh tonnes were purchased by government agencies like NAFED and HAFED. These agencies also had a previous outstanding stock of 7.50 lakh tonnes. Out of this, 9.50 lakh tonnes were sold and as of 1 November 2024, they had a stock of 18 lakh tonnes of mustard left.

Industry and trade organizations have expressed the possibility of domestic production of 115 lakh tonnes of mustard (revised estimate) in the Rabi season of 2023-24. Under this, production of mustard has been estimated to be 53 lakh tonnes in Rajasthan, 13-13 lakh tonnes in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh,

12 lakh tonnes in Haryana-Punjab, 5 lakh tonnes in Gujarat and 19 lakh tonnes in other states including Bihar-Bengal. After excluding the arrival of 7 lakh tonnes in February,

a stock of 108 lakh tonnes remained for the marketing season, but after adding the previous outstanding stock of 12 lakh tonnes, the total availability reached 120 lakh tonnes. Out of this, 95 lakh tonnes arrived till 31 October.

According to the agency, on November 1, 2024, a total stock of about 36 lakh tonnes of mustard was available in the country, including 13 lakh tonnes with farmers,

5 lakh tonnes with processors and stockists and 18 lakh tonnes with government agencies. Mustard sowing has already started and the harvesting and preparation of its new crop will start in February-March.
