Winnipeg. Data from StatsCan, an authorized agency of the federal government, shows that when the new marketing season for 2024-25 began in August, only 36,464 tonnes of lentils could be exported from Canada, but due to increased supply and availability of new goods in September, its shipment jumped 483 percent (almost five times) to a height of 2,12,599 tonnes.
Including this, a total of 2,49,063 tonnes of lentils were shipped from Canada in the two months of August-September 2024, which was slightly more than the total export of 2,48,270 tonnes in August-September 2023. The export performance was better in August last year.
During September 2024, India was the biggest buyer of Canadian lentils, importing about 81 thousand tonnes.
After this, Turkey stood second and United Arab Emirates (UAE) stood third, which imported 40,554 tonnes and 18,075 tonnes of lentils from Canada respectively.
According to trade analysts, the price of lentils softened somewhat in the Canadian market last week as the pace of its exports remained slow and the supply pressure in the global market has started increasing due to the arrival of new goods in Australia.
Although red lentils are mainly produced in Australia, the effect of softening of the average market price was also seen on the prices of green lentils in Canada.
The difference in the prices of red lentils and thick green lentils in the local market had increased, which started affecting the business, so when the price of red lentils fell, the price of green lentils also came down somewhat.
Australia's government agency - ABARES is likely to release the crop production estimate on 3 December 2024. Critics say that in its new report, the agency can make a huge cut in the domestic production estimate of lentils. Because adverse weather conditions in major producing provinces have caused considerable damage to crops.
