Canadian Pea Production Rises 31% to 3.9 Million Tonnes

Ottawa. According to the final figures released by the government agency Statistics Canada, total pea production in Canada during the current 2025-26 marketing season reached 3.9 million tonnes, an increase of 1 million tonnes, or 31%, compared to the 2.9 million tonnes produced in the 2024-25 season.
Furthermore, total pea availability, including carryover stocks, is expected to increase by 1.2 million tonnes. The pea harvest has already been completed, and the entire production is now in the hands of farmers.
However, this bumper crop and large stock are becoming a problem for Canadian pea producers. This is because strong production in other major producing and exporting countries, including Russia, has significantly increased the global supply of peas, posing a serious challenge for Canada in exporting its product.
Global pea production in 2025 surged to 15.1 million tonnes, an increase of 11%, or 1.4 million tonnes, compared to the 13.7 million tonnes produced in 2024. The increase in pea production was particularly significant in Canada, Russia, and the European Union.
The above figures clearly indicate that the global pea production and supply situation is favorable in the 2025-26 season. While global demand remained strong initially, it is now showing signs of slowing down.
This has exacerbated Canada's difficulties, as the vast Chinese market is virtually closed to its peas, with Russian peas dominating the market. India has also imposed a 30% import duty on yellow peas. Russia's challenge in Asian markets is sounding alarm bells for Canada.
Canada still has a large exportable stock of peas, and prices are soft. This could dampen farmers' enthusiasm and interest in pea cultivation this year. Pea planting is scheduled to begin in April.
