Cashew Trade Shifts: Global Production Declines and Tariff Impact
★ Global cashew production in 2025–26 is expected to fall by 2% to 5.21 million tons, compared to 5.288 million tons in 2024–25. Côte d’Ivoire will remain the top producer with an estimated 1.25 million tons of output.
★ India’s production is projected to rise by 18% to 725,000 tons, up from 615,000 tons in 2024–25. While India contributes 14% to global raw cashew production, it only accounts for 5% of exports due to high domestic consumption, which makes up nearly 31% of global demand.
★ Cambodia’s production is expected to fall by 4% to 775,000 tons, while Tanzania’s output will remain steady at 425,000 tons. Vietnam, the world’s largest cashew processor, is likely to see a 10–15% drop in production, down to 300,000 tons.
★ China imported a record 115,000 tons of cashews from Vietnam in 2024. With cashew prices relatively lower than other nuts, demand is increasing in China.
★ Trade tensions between the US and Vietnam have escalated due to the announcement of a 46% tariff on Vietnamese products, though the tariff has been temporarily suspended until July. Currently, a 10% tariff is in place, which has already started affecting trade flows.
