Mumbai. Despite the harvesting and preparation of the new crop gaining momentum in India—along with estimates forecasting a slight increase in production—the import of lentils from countries such as Canada and Australia continues unabated, although the pace has slowed down somewhat.
According to a report by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), Australia exported 138,322 tonnes of lentils to India in December 2025. This figure rose to 159,024 tonnes in January 2026 but subsequently declined to 81,364 tonnes in February 2026. Nevertheless,
over this three-month period, a total of 878,709 tonnes of lentils were shipped to India, accounting for approximately half—or 50 percent—of Australia's total lentil exports of 776,008 tonnes. Australia's total lentil exports amounted to 316,358 tonnes in December, 280,314 tonnes in January, and 179,335 tonnes in February.
During this quarter, Australia exported 210,000 tonnes of lentils to Bangladesh, 44,000 tonnes to Egypt, 23,000 tonnes each to Nepal and Pakistan, 51,000 tonnes to Sri Lanka, and 44,000 tonnes to the UAE.
