New Delhi. Although compared to last year, the sowing area of pulses during the Kharif season this year increased from 119.28 lakh hectares to 128.58 lakh hectares by 9.30 lakh hectares or 7.4 percent, but despite this,
the Union Agriculture Ministry has estimated the total production of pulses to decrease by 20 thousand tons from 69.74 lakh tons to 69.54 lakh tons.
The main reason for this is the huge decline of about 4 lakh tons in the production of urad. Some critics say that the increase in the production of pigeon pea estimated by the Agriculture Ministry is somewhat less than the reality.
Although there has been a good increase in the sowing area of tur (arhar), but the government has estimated its production to increase by only 85 thousand tons from 34.17 lakh tons last year to 35.02 lakh tons this time.
The production of moong is expected to increase from 11.54 lakh tons to 13.83 lakh tons, but the production of urad is estimated to fall from 16.04 lakh tons to 12.09 lakh tons, which is the lowest level in the last decade. According to a leading organization,
the production of tur is expected to be better this year because the crop is in very good condition in top producing states like Karnataka and Maharashtra. But now we have to wait and watch.
The arrival of new tur stock may start from the end of November or beginning of December. The sowing area of tur increased to 46.50 lakh hectares this time.
The condition of the crop in Karnataka is being said to be normal and there is no possibility of much increase in its yield rate because the weather was not favorable when the plants were flowering. Due to continuous rain, the growth of the plants took place in horizontal lines and not in vertical lines.
