First Rabi Sowing Data Released: Key Highlights
Overall Rabi Sowing Increased by 17%
The total area sown with Rabi crops has increased by 17% compared to the previous year.
Despite a 64% of the country's 720 districts receiving less-than-average rainfall between October 1 and December 2, the sowing area has seen strong growth.
Wheat Sowing Surge
Wheat sowing saw a significant jump, increasing by 12.38 lakh hectares, reaching a total of 200.4 lakh hectares.
This is still below the 5-year average of 312.35 lakh hectares, but the rise in sowing is impressive nonetheless.
High market prices likely drove increased farmer interest in wheat sowing this season.
Paddy Sowing Marginally Higher
The sowing of paddy has increased slightly from last year, with an additional 9.74 lakh hectares.
However, the total area remains far below the 5-year average of 42.02 lakh hectares, indicating less focus on paddy relative to other crops.
Coarse Grains Sowing Growth
Sowing of coarse grains has seen considerable growth:
Sorghum: Area jumped from 3.37 lakh hectares to 17.73 lakh hectares.
Maize: Increased by 34,000 hectares, reaching 6.87 lakh hectares.
Barley: Increased by 62,000 hectares to 4.27 lakh hectares, nearing the 5-year average of 5.63 lakh hectares.
State-wise Sowing Trends
Sowing activity has been strong across almost all states, likely driven by the high prices seen in the previous season, which encouraged farmers to plant more crops.
Summary:
The first Rabi sowing data indicates a positive trend overall, with a significant increase in wheat and coarse grains sowing. Farmers have shown strong interest in planting crops, driven by favorable market conditions and high prices, despite challenges like lower-than-average rainfall. However, paddy remains far below its 5-year average, reflecting shifting crop priorities.
