New Delhi. Although the central government is taking all precautionary steps to control food inflation, its meaningful and positive results are not visible on the ground.
Due to the jump in food inflation, the inflation rate based on the wholesale price index increased to the highest level in the last 16 months in June 2024. Inflation in food items was 7.40 percent in May, which increased to 8.68 percent in June.
In fact, last month there was a tremendous jump in the prices of vegetables and the prices of green vegetables along with potatoes, onions and tomatoes reached the sky.
Along with this, the prices of some varieties of grains and pulses were also increased. The price of various food products is still at a very high level.
Recently the government had said that the wholesale market price of pulses fell by about 4 percent during the last one month, but the retail market price did not come down accordingly.
The prices of rice, wheat and coarse cereals are also running high, while due to weak supply side, the prices of pulses have been rising and strengthening for a long time.
This has increased the difficulties of the common people to a great extent. The government has banned the commercial export of non-basmati white rice, wheat and its products, sugar and onion etc.
and has made the import of five major pulses - tur, urad, masoor, desi gram and yellow peas completely duty free. Its objective is to increase the supply and availability of these products in the domestic sector and to curb the rising prices, but meaningful results are yet to come.
