Good increase in export of peas and chickpeas from Canada in September

Vancouver. Due to increased supply and availability of new goods and strong demand in importing countries, the export performance of Canadian peas and chickpeas in September was better than in August.

Data from government agency Stats Can shows that in the first two months of the current marketing season i.e. August-September, about 6.36 lakh tonnes of peas were exported from Canada, which was much higher than the shipment of 5.40 lakh tonnes in the same months last month.

In September 2024, the highest export of 3.53 lakh tonnes of peas from Canada was to India. After this, 2.27 lakh tonnes were shipped to China and 15 thousand tonnes to Cuba. Only yellow peas are imported in India.

As far as chickpeas are concerned, its export from Canada in September jumped 59 percent from 7819 tonnes to 12,405 tonnes in September as compared to August.

Out of this, Turkey imported the highest 2427 tonnes and Italy imported 1967 tonnes, while India stood third with imports of 1717 tonnes.

During the two months of August-September 2024, a total of 20,224 tonnes of Kabuli gram could be exported from Canada, which was much less than the shipment of 27,852 tonnes in the same period of the year 2023. Actually, the export performance of August was not good this time.

It is expected to improve in the coming time. The export performance of peas is likely to remain somewhat weak.
