Bhopal. Due to extremely heavy rains, flood-like situation and waterlogging in the fields, there is a possibility of about 25-30 percent damage to Kharif crops in 5-6 lakh hectares of land in Madhya Pradesh (MP).
The total loss to crops has been estimated at Rs 5000 crore. The districts of Madhya Pradesh where Kharif crops have suffered the most damage include Morena, Shivpuri, Guna, Ashok Nagar, Rewa, Damoh, Sagar, Vidisha and Raisen.
According to the state agriculture department, soybean, urad, moong and maize as well as paddy crop have suffered heavy damage in the above districts.
Crops have been submerged in thousands of acres of land and due to waterlogging in the newly sown fields, the seeds have rotted and could not germinate.
Due to the continuation of heavy rains with strong winds, the fields have been filled with water. Due to lack of proper drainage system, there is a danger of the Kharif crops being attacked by insects and diseases, which can cause serious damage to the crops.
According to the Agriculture Department, soybean crop alone has been destroyed in at least 40 thousand hectares. At present, the damage is being assessed and the real picture will be revealed when the water level decreases. According to farmers' organizations, Kharif crops worth Rs 4000-5000 crore have been destroyed so far.
This destruction has mainly happened in the Narmada river belt and Gwalior-Chambal division. About 25 percent of the crops have been completely destroyed in an area of more than 5 lakh hectares. The government should immediately conduct a comprehensive survey of this and give compensation to the farmers.
In many districts, especially soybean and maize crops have been badly affected. The monsoon rains are still continuing and water is also being released from dams and reservoirs, due to which there is a possibility of further damage to the crops.
