Mumbai. Although export of many agricultural products from the African country Mozambique has been banned, the reasons for this have not been disclosed yet.
Exports from Mozambique's neighbouring country Malawi are also being stopped, whereas Tuvar (Pigeon Pea) is imported on a large scale from both these countries in India.
According to rough estimates, Mozambique has a stock of about 1.00-1.25 lakh tonnes of Tuvar, whose export shipment has been stopped.
Mozambique has been stopping the export of Tuvar to India for a long time due to various reasons. Now the preparation for harvesting of its new crop is going to start soon there. It is understood that during the current year, the weather conditions in Mozambique were not completely favorable and Tuvar crop was also damaged due to various natural disasters.
There was heavy rain and flood in February-March due to which sowing of this important pulse crop was late, so harvesting may also start late.
During May 2023, about 38,288 tonnes of tur was imported in India, which jumped 57 percent to 60,271 tonnes in May 2024. This also included imports of 15 thousand tonnes from Mozambique, 18 thousand tonnes from Sudan, the highest 18,450 tonnes from Myanmar, 2007 tonnes from Nigeria and 1767 tonnes from Kenya.
7 percent more tur was imported into India from Myanmar during May 2024 as compared to May 2023. According to the available data, during the first five months of the current calendar year i.e. January-May 2024, a total of about 2.66 lakh tonnes of tur was imported in India, which was about 30 percent less than the imports during the same period last year.
During this period, a decline was recorded in the import of tur, especially from major supplier countries like Myanmar, Mozambique and Sudan.
Here in the domestic division, during the current Kharif season, the production area of Tugar pea has increased to 33.48 lakh hectare till July 19, which is 14.14 lakh hectare more than the sowing area of 19.34 lakh hectare during the same period last year.
