New Delhi. Contrary to the expectations of industry analysts, soybean production area is still leading whereas in view of extremely weak market price, a possibility of decline in its area was being expressed. Soybean production area has increased from 109 lakh hectare last year to 119 lakh hectare this time whereas the sowing process is not over yet.
As far as groundnut is concerned, its sowing was lagging behind last year. But when the activity of farmers increased in top producing states like Gujarat and Rajasthan, the area also started increasing. Now its production area has increased by 4.19 lakh hectare from 33.15 lakh hectare last year to 37.34 lakh hectare. Its sowing has almost ended in the southern states but sowing is going on in the western and central states. In future, there is a possibility of improvement in the area of both soybean and groundnut.
But the sowing of sesame during Kharif season has lagged behind and the area under castor is lagging behind. According to official figures, compared to last year, during the current Kharif season, the production area of sesame has decreased from 7.15 lakh hectares to 5.61 lakh hectares and the sowing area of castor has dropped from 1.14 lakh hectares to 26 thousand hectares. The highest production of castor is in Gujarat and Rajasthan. In the initial phase, castor is cultivated in a limited area in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The production area of sunflower has increased from 42 thousand hectares to 57 thousand hectares and the area under nigerseed has increased from 3 thousand hectares to 22 thousand hectares. The picture of the area under oilseeds will become clear by the end of August.
