Monsoon and Its Impact on Crops: Tur (Pigeon Pea)
★ Recently, the weather department reported the possibility of a weak monsoon, which may impact rain-dependent crops.
★ Karnataka and Maharashtra together account for about 67% of total tur (pigeon pea) production.
★ In both states, irrigation facilities are available in only about 43% of the area, while the remaining 57% depends on rainfall.
★ In such a situation, if rainfall is inadequate, production may decline.
★ Looking at total pulses, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh together contribute around 82% of total production, with adequate irrigation mainly available only in Madhya Pradesh, while other states remain below average in irrigation coverage.
