News Capsule: India’s Mung Exports Surge, China Emerges as the Largest Buyer
★ India’s mung exports have witnessed an exceptional surge at the beginning of the 2026-27 financial year. During April-June 2026, India exported around 146,995 tonnes of mung, nearly six times the 24,176.8 tonnes exported during the same period last year. This represents an increase of around 123,000 tonnes, or 508%.
★ According to the available data, mung exports stood at 37,595 tonnes in April, 43,156 tonnes in May and 66,243.7 tonnes in June. Exports reached their highest level in June.
★ China’s demand has emerged as the biggest driver behind this surge. During April-June 2026, China imported around 121,908 tonnes of mung from India, compared with just 17,270 tonnes during the same period last year.
★ China’s purchases therefore increased by around 104,638 tonnes, with imports rising more than sevenfold, or approximately 606%, year-on-year. China accounted for around 83% of India’s total mung exports during April-June 2026.
★ Bangladesh also imported around 6,030 tonnes of mung during April-June. This indicates strong demand for Indian mung from Asian markets.
★ The data shows that India’s mung exports during April-June this year were exceptionally high compared with previous years. India exported around 189,750 tonnes of mung during the entire 2025-26 financial year, meaning that nearly 77% of last year’s full-year export volume has already been shipped in just the first three months of 2026-27.
★ The sharp rise in mung exports is also significant for the domestic market. In particular, China’s exceptionally large purchases have strengthened overseas demand for Indian mung. If demand from China and other Asian buyers remains strong, it could tighten domestic availability and provide support to mung prices.
★ India’s mung exports are growing at a record pace this year, with China at the center of the surge. China’s purchases reaching around 121,908 tonnes during April-June mark a significant development for the Indian mung market.
