News Capsule: US pulse acreage trends mixed: USDA report
★ According to the USDA seeding intentions report, mixed trends are being observed in pulse crop acreage in the United States.
Peas:
★ Pea acreage is expected to see a marginal decline from 1.2 million acres to 1.19 million acres. The smaller-than-expected drop has surprised the market. Despite higher input costs, farmers may continue planting peas in anticipation of better returns.
~~~~~~~
Lentils:
★ Green lentil acreage is projected to decline sharply from 1.1 million acres to 854,000 acres. If yields remain at average levels, production could fall from 492,000 tonnes to around 337,000 tonnes. Weak demand continues to weigh on prices.
~~~~~~~
Chickpeas:
★ Chickpea acreage is also likely to decline. In the US, area may drop by about 13% from 573,200 acres to 501,300 acres. Combined acreage in the US and Canada is expected to fall by around 3%, from 1.11 million to 1.08 million acres.
★ Overall, higher stocks and weaker prices are driving a decline in pulse sowing, although the reduction in pea acreage is expected to remain limited.
