News Capsule: Vietnam’s rice exports rise sharply to new markets
★ According to Vietnam Customs, following the Philippines’ temporary suspension of rice imports from September 1, Vietnam’s overall exports declined, but shipments to new markets like China and Africa have surged.
★ In September, Vietnam exported 467,000 tons of rice — about half the volume of August. In the first half of October, exports reached 201,000 tons, down from 379,000 tons in the same period last year.
★ Despite the Philippines’ import halt, Vietnam’s monthly rice exports have remained around 500,000 tons. Exports to China have increased several times this year — reaching 600,000 tons in the first nine months compared to 241,000 tons a year earlier.
★ Prices have also risen to nearly US$500 per ton from around $400 last year.
★ The African market is also showing strong demand. Unlike in previous years when African importers bought mainly in the second and third quarters, this year purchases began early and continue into the fourth quarter.
★ By the end of October, Vietnam’s total rice exports had exceeded 7 million tons, with full-year estimates of about 8 million tons — positioning Vietnam to surpass Thailand and become the world’s second-largest rice exporter after India.
