News Capsule: Wheat auctions under OMSS to resume
★ The government will resume e-auctions of wheat under the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS) for 2025-26 from January 14. The tender will be uploaded on Friday, and the auction will be held next Wednesday.
★ Wheat auctions had been temporarily suspended in December due to weak sales and low buying interest from millers and processors. According to officials, the offer quantity in the upcoming auctions is likely to be more than 200,000–300,000 tonnes per round, with auctions expected to be conducted on a weekly basis.
★ The resumption of auctions has been termed a positive move by the industry, as it is expected to ease price pressure during the lean season. Over the past two weeks, uncertainty around OMSS auctions had led to a decline of 100–200 rupees per quintal in wheat prices.
★ For 2025-26, the government has allocated a total of 3.0 million tonnes of wheat to be sold under OMSS, unchanged from last year, through the Food Corporation of India.
