New Delhi. This time farmers showed tremendous enthusiasm in the cultivation of paddy, the most important food grain of the Kharif season, as it got good support from the monsoon rains right from the beginning.
According to government data, the paddy production area at the national level increased by 9 lakh hectares from 404.50 lakh hectares last year to the top level of 413.50 lakh hectares this time,
which is about 12 lakh hectares more than the five-year normal average area of 401.55 lakh hectares. Due to abundant rains, the condition of the crop remains better.
Meanwhile, the Union Agriculture Ministry has estimated the domestic production of rice to increase by 20.70 lakh hectares from 1357.55 lakh tonnes in the 2022-23 season to a new record level of 1378.25 lakh tonnes in the 2023-24 season, which is the final estimate.
This includes the production of all three seasons - Kharif, Rabi and Zaid. Last year, the area under paddy cultivation was less in the Kharif season and the monsoon rains were also uncertain and irregular.
In comparison, the area under cultivation has increased in the current Kharif season and there has been adequate rainfall. In some areas, paddy crops are facing the threat of being damaged due to torrential rains and severe floods, but despite this, the overall production is expected to be better.
