Production of coarse grains expected to increase with the help of maize and sorghum

New Delhi. Compared to last year, this year there was a good increase in the sowing area of maize and sorghum and the weather was also quite favorable, due to which its production is expected to increase.
The area of millet decreased slightly, while the ragi crop was damaged due to heavy rains and floods, so its yield is likely to decline.
According to the first advance estimate of the Union Agriculture Ministry, the gross domestic production of coarse grains in the Kharif season of 2024-25 can increase to 378.18 lakh tonnes, which is 22.83 lakh tonnes more than the reviewed production of 355.35 lakh tonnes of 2023-24 season.
Compared to last year, during the current Kharif marketing season, the production of the most important coarse grain at the national level - maize is expected to jump by 22.96 lakh tons from 222.45 lakh tons to 245.41 lakh tons and increase by 6.87 lakh tons from 15.09 lakh tons to 21.96 lakh tons, while on the other hand,
the production of millets is likely to decrease by 2.88 lakh tons from 96.63 lakh tons to 93.75 lakh tons and the production of ragi is likely to fall by 2.80 lakh tons from 16.70 lakh tons to 13.90 lakh tons.
Similarly, the production of small millets is also expected to slip by 1.34 lakh tons from 4.49 lakh tons last year to 3.15 lakh tons this time.
The total production of Shree Anna may remain stuck at 132.77 lakh tons compared to 132.90 lakh tons. In the Kharif season of 2024-25,
a slight increase was registered in the sowing area of maize in almost all the major producing states because on one hand its market price was high and strong and on the other hand its MSP has also been increased substantially.
