New Delhi. Due to the activity of the north-east monsoon and the deep circulation in the Gulf of Mannar, heavy rains have occurred in South India during the last few days and this trend is likely to continue for a day or two.
On the other hand, the weather in northern India remains dry and the temperature has started falling at night. The rain in Tamil Nadu and Kerala has flooded the fields.
Although spices are cultivated more in Kerala, the production of other agricultural crops including pulses, oilseeds and coarse grains is very low or negligible, but pulses and oilseeds crops are sown in Tamil Nadu during the Rabi season. Wheat is not produced in these two states, nor is mustard, barley and gram cultivated.
The above Rabi crops are produced on a large scale in the northern, central and western regions of the country. Its major producing states include Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Bengal and Bihar etc.
Sowing of Rabi crops has started and the weather conditions remain favourable to a large extent. During the southwest monsoon season, the national level received more than normal average rainfall, due to which there is sufficient moisture in the soil of the fields.
Apart from this, the domestic market price of most commodities, especially wheat and gram, remains at a very attractive level for the farmers.
As a result, the sowing area of both the crops is expected to increase. The area of mustard is likely to remain around last year. It seems difficult to see much fluctuation in the area of lentil, pea and barley.
