New Delhi. Farmers' enthusiasm for cultivating wheat, the most important food grain of the Rabi season, has reached an all-time high this year, as they are confident of earning better incomes.
Latest data from the Union Agriculture Ministry shows that the total area under wheat cultivation during the current Rabi season, as of January 2, 2026, has surged to an all-time high of 334.17 lakh hectares, which is 6.13 lakh hectares more than the record sowing area of 328.04 lakh hectares in the same period last year.
This year, the normal average area for wheat cultivation was set at 312.35 lakh hectares, against which the actual acreage has significantly exceeded expectations. The sowing process is almost complete.
According to agricultural experts, the weather conditions have been largely favorable for the wheat crop, and if this trend continues, the production of this important food grain in the 2025-26 Rabi season could surge to a new record level.
According to government data, a record production of 1179 lakh tonnes of wheat was achieved in the 2024-25 Rabi season. A production target of 1190 lakh tonnes has been set for the 2025-26 season.
According to official sources, late sowing of wheat is still underway in some areas, and the information on acreage is also reaching the Union Agriculture Ministry with a delay.
Given this, it appears that the total area under cultivation may increase further to 335-336 lakh hectares by the end of the season.
The Indian Institute of Wheat and Barley Research, Karnal, in its advisory issued till January 15, 2026, stated that the favorable weather conditions are leading to good development of the wheat crop, but there is a possibility of pest and disease outbreaks. Therefore, farmers need to keep a close watch and regularly monitor their fields.
