Situation of Lentils in Canada and the USA (2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons)
Canada - Season 2024-25:
Exports are expected to rise sharply, reaching up to 2.1 million tons (LT), driven by strong demand from Turkey and India.
Due to higher total supply, carry-out stocks are expected to increase.
Lentil prices are likely to face pressure throughout the 2024-25 period.
In January, the price of large green lentils rose by $20/ton, while red lentil prices in Saskatchewan increased by $25/ton.
The price of No. 1 large green lentils is likely to remain at a $550/ton premium over No. 1 red lentils, which was a $785/ton premium in 2023-24.

USA - Season 2024-25:
Lentil production in the USA, primarily green lentils, is estimated to reach 936,000 tons, a 72% increase compared to 2023-24.
Canadian lentil exports to the USA are expected to decline to 80,000 tons in 2024-25.

Canada - Season 2025-26:
Canada’s lentil planting area is expected to slightly increase to 1.73 million hectares, but production may decrease by 2%, reaching 2.4 million tons.
Total supply and exports are expected to rise to 2.8 million tons and 2.2 million tons, respectively.
Carry-out stocks are likely to decrease slightly compared to the previous year.
Due to a rise in global supply and carry-out stocks, average lentil prices are expected to fall compared to 2024-25.

Impact on India:
Lentil imports are to be completed by March 31, 2025, and it is expected that imports may be extended into the next year.
A record quantity of lentils was imported last year, and this year too, imports remain strong.
Domestic production is looking promising, with an expected output of 1.7 million tons.
With increasing imports and domestic production, the supply will remain steady.
There is little expectation for significant price hikes in the market unless there is a change in the import rules for peas, which could provide support to lentil prices.
