Sufficient Domestic Production of Soymeal to Meet Domestic Demand

Mumbai. The country has sufficient stock of soymeal to meet domestic demand and requirements, and therefore, there is no need to import it from abroad, especially GM soymeal. This claim has been made by the Indore-based Soybean Processors Association of India (SOPA), citing data.
According to SOPA, during the 2025-26 season, with a production of 105.36 lakh tonnes, a carryover stock of 4.66 lakh tonnes from the previous season, and a potential import of 7 lakh tonnes, the total availability of soybeans in the country will reach 117.02 lakh tonnes. It is noteworthy that this soybean production figure is from SOPA, while the government's figure is much higher.
Of this total availability of 117.02 lakh tonnes, 12 lakh tonnes will be reserved for the next sowing season, 5 lakh tonnes will be used directly, and 97 lakh tonnes will be used for crushing and processing. A surplus stock of approximately 3 lakh tonnes of soybeans will remain at the end of the season.
The crushing of these 97 lakh tonnes will produce 76.54 lakh tonnes of soymeal, while a carryover stock of 68 tonnes was available at the beginning of the season. If there are no imports from abroad, the total availability of soymeal will reach 77.22 lakh tonnes.
Of this, 8 lakh tonnes are expected to be exported, 8 lakh tonnes for domestic food use, and 60 lakh tonnes for domestic feed use, totaling 76 lakh tonnes. A surplus stock of 1.22 lakh tonnes of soymeal may remain at the end of the marketing season.
