Sao Paulo. Latin American country- Sugar production is likely to be affected this time due to dry and hot weather in the central southern region of Brazil and fire in sugarcane fields.
It is worth mentioning that about 90 percent of sugar is produced in Brazil in the central southern region.
Sao Paulo is its most prominent producer province which alone produces about 60 percent of sugar. Due to the terrible fire in the same Sao Paulo province, sugarcane crop was either completely or partially burnt in a large area.
Earlier, due to lack of rain and high temperature, sugarcane crop was also damaged and sugar recovery rate was decreasing.
A leading analyst firm has reduced the sugar production estimate in the central southern region of Brazil by 10 lakh tons from 403 lakh tons to 393 lakh tons.
According to an industry body, during the current season, about 2000 incidents of fire took place in Sao Paulo province, due to which sugarcane crop in about 80 thousand hectares area was destroyed.
At least 50 lakh tons of sugarcane was destroyed, due to which 5 lakh tons less sugar will be produced.
Sugarcane crop there has also been affected and is still being affected by severe heat and lack of moisture.
According to the top industry body - UNICA, sugar production in the central southern region during the second fortnight of August this year decreased by 6 percent to around 32.60 lakh tons compared to last year.
In Brazil, the season of harvesting, preparation and crushing of the new crop of sugarcane and production of sugar and ethanol started from April 1 itself.
The production situation remained satisfactory from April to June and there was no significant change in July as well, but the effect of adverse weather started becoming visible from August.
The situation is expected to weaken further in the coming months. Interesting fact is that during 1 April to 31 August 2024,
the total production of sugar in Brazil increased to 271.70 lakh tonnes which was about 4 percent more than the production of the same period of the year 2023, but its production is expected to decline from September as there is still a lack of rain there.
