Target set for production of Kharif crops in Karnataka

Bangalore. Karnataka, an important agricultural producing state of South India, had to face a severe drought last year, due to which there was a huge decline in the production of Kharif crops.
But good monsoon rains are expected during the current year, in view of which the state government has increased the target for production of Kharif crops.
During the current Kharif season of 2024-25, a target of production of 112 lakh tonnes of food grains has been set in Karnataka, while the target of its sowing has been fixed at about 57.51 lakh hectares.
Due to severe drought, the growth rate of agricultural sector in Karnataka in the season 2023-24 was negative and the government was forced to declare 223 out of the total 236 talukas of the state as drought affected areas.
For Kharif 2024, the target of paddy area in Karnataka has been fixed at 10.60 lakh hectares and the target of rice production has been fixed at 32.97 lakh tonnes. Similarly, the target for sowing area of maize has been set at 15.40 lakh hectares and the production target at 49.28 lakh tonnes.
Karnataka is one of the major maize producing states of the country. Ragi is produced on a large scale in Karnataka.
This time, the target of producing 11.76 lakh tonnes of ragi has been set in the sowing area of 7.30 lakh hectares.
Similarly, the production target for Kharif season jowar has been set at 1.12 lakh tonnes and its sowing target has been set at 75 thousand hectares.
Due to high domestic market prices, the sowing area of Kharif season pulses crops is expected to increase in Karnataka this time.
In view of this, the State Agriculture Department has set the target of area of Arhar (Tuvar) at 15 lakh hectares and the production target at 11.95 lakh tonnes. Similarly, the area of moong has been estimated to be 3.99 lakh hectares and production at 1.50 lakh tonnes.
The target for sowing of oilseed crops has been set at 9.79 lakh hectares and the production target has been set at 9.87 lakh tons.
This time, the target for production of 3.83 lakh tons of groundnut, 1.05 lakh tons of sunflower and 4.72 lakh tons of soybean has been set in the state.
