New Delhi. Although there was a good increase in the sowing area of tur (tuvar) and moong during the Kharif season this year as compared to last year, and the area of moth also eventually moved ahead after the initial decline, but the area of urad remained far behind.
Natural disasters also damaged the urad crop. The Union Agriculture Ministry has tried to keep the figures at a practical level to a great extent in the first advance production estimate of Kharif pulses crops for 2024-25.
According to the data of the Ministry of Agriculture, the total production of pulses at the national level in the Kharif season of 2023-24 was 69.74 lakh tonnes,
which is likely to fall by 20 thousand tonnes to 69.54 lakh tonnes in the Kharif season of 2024-25. Under this, the production of Tuvar is expected to improve by 85 thousand tons from 34.17 lakh tons to 35.02 lakh tons and the production of Moong is expected to increase by 2.29 lakh tons from 11.54 lakh tons to 13.83 lakh tons,
but the production of Urad is expected to decrease by 3.95 lakh tons from 16.04 lakh tons to 12.09 lakh tons. The production of other pulses crops is expected to increase by 61 thousand tons from 7.99 lakh tons to reach 8.60 lakh tons this time.
During the initial phase, the domestic production of Tuvar was expected to jump rapidly to 44-45 lakh tons this year, but considering the damage to the crop due to heavy rains and severe floods in top producing states like Karnataka and Maharashtra as well as states like Gujarat,
Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh, the Agriculture Ministry has estimated its total loss to be only 35 lakh tons, which seems to be quite practical.
However, this is the initial or first advance estimate while three more estimates are to be released, so there can be a change in the production figures of other pulses including tur. The area under urad had decreased in Madhya Pradesh, although it is its major producer state.
