Tur output likely to drop due to flood and rain damage

Mumbai. Due to crop damage caused by excess rainfall and severe floods in many parts of the country, the production of pulses during the Kharif season is expected to decline this year.

Production of the most important pulse, tur (pigeon pea), is expected to decline to between 30 and 34 lakh tonnes, a 5 to 16 percent drop from the government's production estimate of 35.60 lakh tonnes last season.

Similarly, urad production is expected to decline from 13 lakh tonnes last year to between 9 and 12 lakh tonnes this time, and mung bean production is expected to decline from 17.50 lakh tonnes to between 10 and 15 lakh tonnes.

According to the latest data from the Union Agriculture Ministry, the area under tur (tur) cultivation in this year's Kharif season improved from 4.65 million hectares to 4.66 million hectares compared to last year, and the area under urad (black gram) increased by about 7 percent to 2.44 million hectares, while the area under mung bean (green gram) declined from 3.5 million hectares to 3.49 million hectares.

The above data shows that the area under tur cultivation for these three pulses remained largely close to last year's level, but heavy rains during the final phase of the southwest monsoon, resulting in prolonged waterlogging and severe flooding in some areas, caused significant damage to the pulse crops. Monsoon rainfall was 8 percent above the normal average.

Similarly, heavy rains were also recorded in many areas in the first half of October. This rain proved disastrous for the Kharif pulse crops, as harvesting for urad and mung bean had already begun. India received 44 percent more rainfall than normal from October 1 to November 6, 2025.

It is worth noting that on September 29, a leading analyst had estimated the total production of tur, urad, and mung beans in the 2025-26 Kharif marketing season to be 6.4 million tons, which was about 200,000 tons less than the 2024-25 season's production of 6.61 million tons.

However, considering the adverse weather in October, he said that the production estimates may be reduced slightly.

The analyst had earlier estimated the production of tur to decrease from 3.5 million tons to 3.4 million tons, the production of urad to decrease from 1.05 million tons to 1.0 million tons, and the production of mung beans to decrease from 1.75 million tons to 1.7 million tons.
