Urad sowing lags after initial growth

New Delhi. Despite regular imports of good quantity from Myanmar, the price of urad in the domestic sector is running much higher than the government support price (MSP), due to which a good increase in its sowing area was expected in the current Kharif season. Clear indications of this were also being received in the initial stage. Till last week, the sowing area of urad was ahead of last year when it reached 13.90 lakh hectares as compared to 12.75 lakh hectares. However, in the last one week, it was sown vigorously and by July 19, its total area at the national level reached 19.62 lakh hectares, but still it remained 24 thousand hectares behind last year's production area of 19.86 lakh hectares.
On the other hand, the production area of moong has jumped from 22.76 lakh hectares last year to 25.11 lakh hectares this time, whereas till last week it was lagging behind. As far as Arhar (Tuar) is concerned, its area has been moving ahead of last year since the beginning and now the difference in sowing area has increased. The production area of Tuar has jumped from 19.34 lakh hectares last year to 33.48 lakh hectares this time.
The central government has increased the minimum support price of tur by 7.90 percent to Rs 7550 per quintal, the support price of urad by 6.50 percent to Rs 7400 per quintal and the support price of moong by 1.40 percent to Rs 8682 per quintal for the 2024-25 season as compared to the 2023-24 season. The sowing process of pulses crops is still going on and will continue in July as well as August. We will have to wait for some time to know the status of the final area. It seems that there will be a good increase in the production area of arhar but there may be some fluctuations in the sowing area of urad and moong. The enthusiasm and attraction of farmers is being seen more in the cultivation of Tuar.
