Weak Monsoon May Boost India’s Pulse Imports

India’s weak monsoon is likely to increase demand for imported pulses in the coming months. Rainfall during June–August was below normal, while September rainfall is also expected to remain below average, raising concerns over kharif pulse production.

Lower production could particularly tighten supplies of pigeon pea (tur/arhar), increasing the need for imports. Lentil imports are also expected to remain strong, while weaker domestic chana availability could support demand for Canadian yellow peas as a substitute.

The impact could extend into the rabi season if poor rainfall leaves insufficient soil moisture for winter crops. If supplies from the Black Sea region remain disrupted, India and neighbouring countries could become even more dependent on Canadian peas.
