New Delhi: The Central Government has granted approval to procure an additional 2.2 million tonnes of wheat in Madhya Pradesh, over and above the previously established target. Previously, when the Madhya Pradesh government had proposed increasing the wheat procurement target, the proposal had been rejected.
Madhya Pradesh is a leading wheat-producing state and ranks second only to Punjab in terms of contributing this vital food grain to the Central Pool. Last year, the state witnessed a government procurement of 7.774 million tonnes of wheat; in light of this, the Ministry of Food had set a procurement target of 7.8 million tonnes for the current year.
However, the Ministry subsequently felt that this target appeared too modest and has, therefore, effected a substantial increase of 2.2 million tonnes. Consequently, the total government procurement target for wheat in Madhya Pradesh has now risen to nearly 10 million tonnes.
It is noteworthy that even last year, the wheat procurement target in Madhya Pradesh was revised upwards on two separate occasions.
Initially, the target stood at 6 million tonnes; this was first raised by 1 million tonnes to 7 million tonnes, and once that target was achieved, it was further increased by another 1 million tonnes to reach 8 million tonnes.
An interesting fact is that while, on one hand, the government has significantly raised the procurement target in Madhya Pradesh, the actual pace of wheat procurement in the state, on the other hand, is lagging considerably behind that of the previous year.
The Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh has stated that the state has witnessed a bumper wheat harvest this year, and the procurement of the entire quantity of wheat arriving at government procurement centers will be ensured. If deemed necessary, the deadline for wheat procurement may also be extended. A shortage of jute bags, however, persists.
