New Delhi. Domestic wheat production is expected to see a significant increase during the current Rabi season due to a substantial increase in the sown area and favorable weather conditions.
According to official data, the area under wheat cultivation has jumped by 6.13 lakh hectares from 328.04 lakh hectares in the 2024-25 season to an all-time high of 334.17 lakh hectares in the current 2025-26 season,
which is approximately 22 lakh hectares more than the five-year average area of 312.35 lakh hectares.
Crop conditions are reported to be satisfactory in the top producing states such as Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Bihar, and Gujarat.
More than 90 percent of the country's wheat production comes from these states. If the weather remains favorable in February-March, the production of this important food grain could once again surge to a new record level.
According to the Union Agriculture Ministry, domestic wheat production in the 2024-25 Rabi season surged to a new record level of 1179.40 lakh tonnes.
The ministry has set a target of 1190 lakh tonnes of wheat production for the 2025-26 season and is confident of achieving this target.
According to the Food Ministry, the average wholesale market price of wheat at the national level has decreased to ₹2852.30 per quintal this year, compared to ₹2970.10 per quintal last year.
The industry and trade sector has sufficient stock of wheat, and its supply and availability in the domestic market remain smooth.
