New Delhi: The sowing of Rabi crops is almost complete, and the total area under cultivation has increased by 16 lakh hectares to 677 lakh hectares this season, compared to 661 lakh hectares in the 2024-25 season. This is significantly higher than the five-year average of 638 lakh hectares.
Compared to the previous season, there has been a good increase in the sowing area of wheat, paddy, gram, lentil, urad, maize, barley, ragi, mustard, and groundnut, while the area under crops like peas, horse gram, sorghum, and sesame has decreased.
Generally, the progress of Rabi crops is satisfactory due to normal weather conditions. Some areas were experiencing a lack of winter rainfall.
However, good rainfall occurred in the northwestern states in the last week of January, and this extended to Madhya Pradesh. The highest production of wheat, barley, gram, lentil, peas, and mustard is in this region.
The crops there are reported to be in good condition. Harvesting of some pulse and oilseed crops has already begun in some areas. Except for wheat, the harvesting and preparation of early-sown major Rabi crops are expected to gain momentum in the coming weeks.
The Meteorological Department has predicted less rainfall and higher temperatures in February, which has increased farmers' concerns.
February is considered a very important month for Rabi crops, so it will be necessary to keep a close watch on the weather patterns.
