Yesterday, the government imposed a 30% import duty on peas.
★ iGrain India, in several of its reports, had advocated for imposing import duties on pulses in support of farmers and the domestic industry.
★ According to the calculations shown in the table, before the duty, the landing cost at the port was approximately ₹34,950 per ton. After adding the 30% import duty, it has increased to ₹43,030 per ton, which means the cost has risen by ₹8,084 per ton — that is, ₹808.4 per quintal or ₹8.1 per kg.
★ At the Mumbai port, the parity (profitability margin) was ₹30 earlier, but after the duty, it has turned into a disparity of ₹778, meaning the imported goods have now become ₹778 costlier.
★ Similarly, in Kanpur, the parity was ₹80.3 earlier, which has now turned into a disparity of ₹728, meaning peas in Kanpur are now ₹728 costlier than the imported goods after the new import tax.
