New Delhi. The Union Ministry of Fertilizers states that an adequate stock of chemical fertilizers is currently available in the country to meet the demands and requirements of the Kharif season; furthermore, vigorous efforts are being undertaken to boost both domestic production and imports. The adequate availability of fertilizers for farmers will continue to be ensured in the future. However, the import of fertilizers has become more expensive.

The cultivation of Kharif crops is set to commence next month. According to senior official sources, the Union Ministry of Agriculture has estimated the total domestic demand for fertilizers during this year's Kharif season at 390.54 lakh tonnes; against this projected demand, a stock of 200.12 lakh tonnes—or more than 50 percent—is currently available. Typically, the available stock stands at only 33 percent of the total demand.

With the outbreak of hostilities between Iran and the United States, emphasis was placed on increasing domestic fertilizer production. Although certain challenges and hurdles were encountered in this process, production performance has nonetheless remained satisfactory.

Prior to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, fertilizers were being imported at lower costs; subsequently, however, import costs effectively doubled. Domestic production reached 95 lakh tonnes, while 22.60 lakh tonnes were imported from abroad. Consequently, the total fertilizer stock witnessed an additional increase of 117.60 lakh tonnes.
