Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh government has fixed the price of wheat flour at Rs. 20 per kg for distribution to beneficiaries through the Public Distribution System (PDS), effective January 2026. The state's Food, Consumer Affairs and Civil Supplies Department has issued a circular to this effect.
According to the circular, the wheat allocated to the state by the Government of India under the "Tide-over" category is being milled and the resulting flour is being supplied under the PDS.
This will save beneficiaries the cost of milling the wheat, provide them with cheaper flour, and make it more convenient for consumption.
The milling process includes the cost of flour production, packaging, transportation, handling, and administrative expenses. In addition, the cost of purchasing wheat at the export price declared by the central government is also included. After examining all these costs, the final price of wheat flour for the consumer has been fixed at Rs. 20 per kg, which also includes a commission of Re. 1 per kg paid to dealers at fair price shops.
This decision has been taken in accordance with the provisions of the National Food Security Act, 2013. The government has clarified that this revised price is applicable only to wheat flour distributed under the PDS and will be effective from January of the following year.
It is noteworthy that Andhra Pradesh, located in South India, is among the states in the country where wheat production is negligible or non-existent, and rice remains the staple food. However, the consumption of wheat products is gradually increasing there.
