New Delhi. The Union Food Ministry has decided to fix a quota of 25.50 lakh tonnes of sugar for October 2024, which has been increased by 2 lakh tonnes from the quota of 23.50 lakh tonnes announced for September 2023,
3.50 lakh tonnes from the quota of 22 lakh tonnes for August and 1.50 lakh tonnes from the quota of 24 lakh tonnes fixed for July.
The month of October is considered to be the peak time for festivals, so the demand and consumption of sugar is high in this.
In view of this, the free sale quota of sugar was already being estimated to be large. The Union Food Secretary says that due to government policies and intervention, the market price of sugar has remained stable to a large extent.
It seems that the government will make every possible effort to control the rise in sugar prices at least during the festive season.
The quota of 25.50 lakh tonnes of sugar for the month of October will prove to be sufficient and hence the market may remain stable with some fluctuations.
The new marketing season of crushing sugarcane and production of sugar will start from October itself.
The indigenous industry has a huge surplus stock of sugar, hence there is no problem of its supply and availability in the domestic sector.
If the government announces to increase the ex-factory minimum selling price of sugar, then there may be a partially positive psychological effect on the market, otherwise it is difficult for the price of sugar to rise sharply.
