Australia exported 12.12 lakh tonnes of wheat in August

Sydney. Government body- A total of 12, 12, 229 tonnes of wheat was exported from Australia, which also included 2844 tonnes of durum shipment in June. In July, a total of 14,78,178 tonnes of wheat was shipped, including 2503 tonnes of durum. This time wheat exports fell by 18 percent in August as compared to July.
Usually, Australian wheat exports decline during August-September due to off-season of supply. The 2023-24 season formally ended on 30 September.
According to the ABS report, a total of 2,22,804 tonnes of wheat was exported in containers during the month of August, out of which 55 thousand tonnes were shipped to South Africa alone. After this, 35,272 tonnes were exported to Thailand and 33,741 tonnes to Malaysia.
In bulk form, the highest wheat shipment of 2.45 lakh tonnes was made to the Philippines during August 2024, followed by shipments of 2,22,498 tonnes to Indonesia and 1,04,690 tonnes to Yemen.
According to a leading analyst firm, about 18 lakh tonnes of wheat was exported from Australia during August-September, taking the total wheat shipment from there to 195 lakh tonnes in the entire marketing season (October-September) of 2023-24.
The consulting firm has estimated a total wheat production of 303 lakh tonnes in Australia during the 2023-24 season, while other analysts have estimated the production to be around 300 lakh tonnes.
Earlier, wheat production was expected to be between 322-325 lakh tonnes there. Dry weather in South Australia, far southern parts of New South Wales, parts of Victoria and Western Australia damaged the wheat crop and reduced its yield rate.
During the June-August quarter, India imported 18,675 tonnes of wheat from Australia. Of this, 9178 tonnes were imported in June, 3936 tonnes in July and 5561 tonnes in August. India has a basic customs duty of 40 per cent on wheat imports.
