New Delhi. The publication by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)—regarding the increase in the ethanol blending level in biofuels from 22 percent to 30 percent—represents a significant, timely, and pragmatic step forward in advancing India's ethanol blending roadmap. Welcoming this publication,

the All India Distillers Association stated that this is not merely a technical notification; rather, it is a progressive and forward-looking measure aimed at fulfilling the government's long-term commitment toward achieving higher ethanol blending levels, reducing dependence on crude oil imports, and promoting the use of cleaner fuels.

Welcoming the move to reintroduce the E-25 fuel standard, the Association noted that this would provide interim relief to the industry. The country has witnessed a substantial increase in its sugar and ethanol production capacities, and this new initiative will facilitate the utilization of a larger portion of that capacity.

According to the Association, while this is undoubtedly a sound decision in the immediate context, it does not represent the final destination. The government should formulate a plan to further raise the ethanol blending target to 85 percent or even 100 percent in the future.
