New Delhi. Indian farmers' enthusiasm and interest in the cultivation of pulses during the Rabi season continues, leading to good progress in the area under cultivation. According to official data, the total area under pulses during the Rabi season has increased to 73.73 lakh hectares by November 21st this year, which is 5.58 lakh hectares more than the 68.15 lakh hectares sown during the same period last year.
It is worth noting that this year the five-year average area under pulses during the Rabi season has been fixed at 140.42 lakh hectares, of which sowing has been completed in more than 50 percent of the area. The vigorous sowing campaign is still underway.
According to data from the Union Agriculture Ministry, during the current Rabi season, compared to last year, the area under gram production jumped from 49.30 lakh hectares to 53.71 lakh hectares, the area under lentils improved from 8.57 lakh hectares to 9.01 lakh hectares, and the area under peas increased from 4.80 lakh hectares to 5.58 lakh hectares.
Similarly, the area under horse gram also improved from 1.03 lakh hectares to 1.11 lakh hectares. On the other hand, during the same period, the area under black gram production decreased from 99 thousand hectares to 88 thousand hectares, the area under green gram fell from 9 thousand hectares to 7 thousand hectares,
and the area under khesari fell from 1.75 lakh hectares to 1.58 lakh hectares. The area under other pulse crops in the Rabi season also declined from 1.62 lakh hectares last year to 1.43 lakh hectares this time.
Rabi season black gram is cultivated primarily in South India, where heavy rainfall is currently occurring due to the active northeast monsoon.
The government has imposed import duties of 10 percent each on Indian gram and lentils, and 30 percent on yellow peas, which may have boosted farmers' enthusiasm.
