Ottawa. Canada's Ministry of Agriculture projects gross domestic pea production to increase by 19 percent compared to the 2024-25 season, reaching 3.56 million tons in the 2025-26 season. Harvesting has already concluded. Higher yields and increased sown area have contributed to the increase in yields.

Saskatchewan, the leading agricultural producer, accounted for 47 percent of pea production. Nationally, yellow pea production increased from last year to 2.78 million tons.

Additionally, production of 53 million tons of green peas and 250,000 tons of other varieties is projected. With the addition of backlogs, total pea availability is expected to increase by 2.2 percent to 4.1 million tons in the current 2025-26 season.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, out of this total stock of 4.1 million tonnes, 2.2 million tonnes of peas can be exported, which is almost equal to the previous season. Bangladesh and India were the two major buyers of Canadian peas in the two months of August-September 2025.

Due to the significant increase in supply and availability, and no significant increase in exports is expected, the outstanding surplus pea stock could rapidly increase to new record levels by the end of the current marketing season. Domestic pea consumption will also remain normal.

The average market price of peas is projected to decline by more than 30 percent compared to 2024-25, reaching around $280 per tonne in the 2025-26 season. Pea prices for all varieties and grades remain weak.

Canada faces stiff competition from several other countries, including Russia and Ukraine, in the international pea market. Additionally, China imposes a hefty 100 percent import duty on Canadian peas, and the Indian government has also imposed a 30 percent customs duty on yellow peas.

These two countries were previously the two largest buyers of Canadian peas. The duty came into effect in India from November 2025.

Pea production in the United States also jumped 23 percent compared to the 2024-25 season, reaching 0.93 million tons in the 2025-26 season. Its sown area also increased by 21 percent to 1.18 million acres (4.80 lakh hectares).
