Canada Market Update
Lentils
★ As harvest approaches, lentil prices are gradually declining.
★ Production of small green lentils is expected to be above average this year, which is putting pressure on prices.
★ This week, prices under Deferred Delivery Contracts (DDC) ranged between 30 to 33.5 cents per pound.
★ Buyers are also limiting the volume they are willing to purchase.
★ Large green lentils are trading at 35–36 cents per pound (delivered) for both old and new crop.
★ Red lentil trades are happening in the range of 27–29 cents per pound.
★ Initial projections suggest that both large and small green lentil production will increase.
★ Red lentil crop is expected to be smaller compared to last year.
★ With rising production and reduced demand, green lentils are likely to face the most downward pressure on pricing.
★ Red lentils may have a slightly better chance of price stability due to the relatively smaller crop.

Peas
★ This week, bids for old and new crop have mostly converged across all pea types.
★ Yellow peas are trading between $8.00 to $9.00 per bushel.
★ For green peas, new crop bids are at $13.00 per bushel, while old crop trades are reaching up to $14.00 per bushel.
★ Overall, the pea crop is looking decent, and higher production is expected this year.
★ In this situation, consistent export demand is necessary; otherwise, stocks could build up and pressure the market.
★ Uncertainty continues around export demand from China and India.
★ This is generally a quiet period in the market, so we’ll have to wait and watch for any movement as harvest nears.

Chickpeas
★ Old and new crop bids have largely aligned, with larger-sized chickpeas holding steady in the 32–34 cents per pound range.
★ Smaller-sized chickpeas (7mm and 8mm) have been bid around 30 cents per pound (delivered) in recent weeks.
★ The chickpea crop in Canada is rated as average, but with a 13% increase in seeded area (now at 541,000 acres), overall production is expected to rise.
