Canada's Lentil Outstanding Stocks Expected to Reach New Record Highs

Winnipeg. Canada's Ministry of Agriculture has stated that lentil exports from the country are expected to increase to 2.1 million tonnes during the current 2025-26 marketing season (August-July), but despite this, the outstanding surplus stock at the end of the season is expected to reach a new record high.
Consequently, lentil prices may remain under pressure throughout the marketing season. During January 2026, the price of coarse green lentils fell by $10 per tonne in producer markets, while the price of red lentils improved by $10 per tonne in Saskatchewan province.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the price of No. 1 grade coarse green lentils is currently only $95 per tonne higher than the price of No. 1 grade red lentils, compared to a high of $465 per tonne in the 2024-25 season. This clearly indicates that there is an environment of fluctuating prices for red lentils and softening prices for green lentils.
Meanwhile, in the US, lentil production increased by 17 percent to 4.79 lakh tonnes in the 2025-26 season compared to the 2024-25 season. Green lentils are primarily produced in the US. Canada exports limited lentils to the US. Its quantity is expected to be around 75 thousand tonnes in the 2025-26 season.
For the 2026-27 season, lentil sowing area in Canada is expected to decline by 10 percent to 1.6 million hectares, while production is projected to decline by a sharp 33 percent to 2.250 lakh tonnes.
