Winnipeg. Although a good amount of peas was exported from Canada to India-Bangladesh and Pakistan during the current marketing season (August-July) of 2024-25, the total shipment is expected to decline to 2.3 million tonnes compared to 2023-24 due to weak demand from China. China has been a major buyer of Canadian peas.

The supply and availability of peas in Canada remained almost equal to the 2023-24 season, but due to reduction in exports, its outstanding surplus stock will increase. As a result, the average price also remained somewhat lower.

In the 2023-24 marketing season, the price of yellow peas was $ 185 below green peas on average, while in the 2024-25 season it went down to $ 205 per tonne. The price of yellow peas fell significantly compared to green peas as its export demand remained weak. During June 2025, the price of yellow peas in Saskatchewan province of Canada fell by $ 20 per tonne and the price of green peas fell by $ 15 per tonne.

According to the Department of Agriculture of Canada, the domestic production area of peas increased by 9 percent to 14.20 lakh hectares during the current year as compared to last year. Farmers earned more income from pea cultivation compared to many other crops.

In Canada, 51 percent of the pea production area was in Saskatchewan, 43 percent in Alberta and the remaining 6 percent in other states. Although there is a possibility of some decline in the average yield rate of peas due to the weather conditions not being completely favorable there, but due to good increase in sowing area,

its total production is expected to increase to 32 lakh tonnes. With the previous outstanding stock, the total availability of peas in Canada is expected to improve to 36.50 lakh tonnes during the marketing season of 2025-26, due to which more stock will be available for export.

But the Department of Agriculture has estimated the export of peas to fall from 23 lakh tonnes in the 2024-25 season to 20 lakh tonnes in the 2025-26 season. India, China and Bangladesh may remain its three major buyers. With the decrease in exports, the outstanding stock of peas in Canada may reach a record level of about 10 lakh tonnes.
