Chickpea prices expected to remain soft with limited fluctuations

Mumbai: Domestic market prices of chickpeas are likely to remain soft with limited fluctuations in the near future due to weak demand amidst sufficient supply.
There is also no expectation of significant price volatility in pigeon peas (tur) and black gram (urad).
According to a leading trade body, the India Pulses and Grains Association (IPGA), the pulses market is not showing much activity, while the supply and availability situation remains largely comfortable.
The good supply of chickpeas is also putting pressure on the prices of other pulses. Sowing of chickpeas during the Rabi season has been good, and the crop condition remains satisfactory.
According to the association's report, the arrival of new pigeon pea crops is increasing, and millers and traders are purchasing them in proportion.
As a result, there is a considerable balance between the demand and supply of pigeon peas. As far as black gram is concerned, its price is also expected to remain stable within a certain range because imports from Myanmar and Brazil are regular, while domestic demand is not very strong.
Demand for chickpeas may improve somewhat before festivals like Makar Sankranti and Pongal, but imports from Australia will prevent prices from rising significantly.
A surge in prices of chickpeas, lentils, black gram, and pigeon peas can only be expected if there is a significant increase in demand or adverse weather conditions.
