Beijing. Taking an important decision, the Chinese government has abolished customs duty on some products imported from the African country- Mozambique. This also includes tur (tuvar), cashew and macadamia.
Earlier also, some products were announced to be exempted from import duty in China. During the first week of the current month (on 3 September 2024),
an agreement was signed between China and Mozambique in Beijing under which China decided to exempt many important products of Mozambique from import duty.
The implementation of this agreement has started and Mozambique has started preparations to export other products including tur and cashew to China at zero percent duty.
It is noteworthy that Mozambique is the most prominent producer and exporter of tur and an important producer and exporter of cashew in the African continent and both these products have been imported in large quantities from there to India.
But this move of China will increase the challenge for India and it will have to face tough competition from China in the Mozambique market.
Although under the India-Mozambique treaty, Mozambique exports 2 lakh tons of pigeon pea to India every year, which will continue, but there may be difficulty in getting pigeon pea in more quantity from there.
The arrival of new pigeon pea crop has started in Mozambique and the process of its export shipment to India has also started.
