Vancouver. The new marketing season of both these pulses started in August 2024 in Canada, a leading producer and exporter of lentils and peas, but still its exports declined during August as compared to July.
Data from the government body - Statistics Canada (Stats Can) shows that 1,41,990 tonnes of lentils were exported from there in July, which declined to just 36,465 tonnes in August.
Out of this, the maximum 10,151 tonnes of lentils were exported to India, while 4264 tonnes were shipped to Pakistan and 2698 tonnes to the US.
Last year, lentil production in Canada had decreased and the outstanding stock was also low. As a result, prices had increased. By July-August, the off-season supply of lentils reaches its peak there.
Despite this, during the current year, the export of lentils from there remained almost normal in July but decreased significantly in August.
As far as peas are concerned, its export from Canada also fell from 23,154 tonnes in July to 16,539 tonnes in August.
In August, 5663 tonnes of peas were exported from Canada to the US, 3260 tonnes to China and 2039 tonnes to the Philippines.
The interesting fact is that India's name is not included in the top three buyer countries of Canadian peas in August, which means that very little quantity of peas was imported from there to India.
Earlier, India remained the major importer of Canadian peas. In the marketing season of 2023-24, about 24 lakh tonnes of peas were exported from Canada, in which more than one-third was imported by India alone.
But in the first month of the current marketing season of 2024-25, Indian importers did not show any special interest in the import of Canadian yellow peas.
