Tur and Chana prices in Solapur have fallen by ₹100 per quintal, with limited procurement by pulse mills.
Weak demand for pulses in the domestic market continues to weigh on Tur prices. A persistent lack of consumer interest in Tur dal has led to very sluggish buying by pulse millers. Currently, millers are purchasing only what is strictly necessary; consequently, the market lacks demand-side support, keeping prices under pressure.
Due to this weak demand, Tur prices in the Solapur APMC (market yard) have dropped by ₹100 per quintal, now ranging between ₹9,500 and ₹10,400 per quintal. Millers remain unenthusiastic about procurement, as the finished pulse product is not selling well at higher price points.
Similarly, the Chana (chickpea) market has also shown a softening trend. In Solapur, Chana prices have fallen by ₹100 per quintal, with 'mill quality' Chana trading at ₹6,800–₹7,550 per quintal, and the 'Annagiri' variety at ₹6,900–₹7,900 per quintal. Here too, weak buying interest has prevented the market from receiving the expected support.
Key Factors in the Tur Market
Weak Demand for Pulses: Limited consumer demand for Tur dal is impacting the procurement capacity of millers.
Limited Buying by Millers: Pulse mills are purchasing raw material only as per their immediate requirements.
Import Pressure: The availability of Tur imported from Myanmar and African nations is influencing sentiment in the domestic market.
Upcoming Arrivals: New domestic Tur arrivals are expected to begin in December, while imports of Tur are likely to increase during November.
Market Outlook
For the Tur market to see an upward trend, a recovery in demand from pulse millers is essential. Procurement of pigeon pea (tur) is likely to remain limited until there is an uptick in the sale of pulses. However, concerns regarding domestic production and the limited stock of indigenous pigeon pea in the agricultural markets (mandis) may prevent any significant decline in prices.
Similarly, for chickpea (chana), the market is expected to strengthen only when there is an improvement in buying by pulse millers and overall consumer demand. In the near term, demand and procurement by millers will remain the key factors determining the market direction for both commodities.
