Decrease in Lentil Exports from Australia and Canada
★ In February 2025, Canada exported 2,18,978 tonnes of lentils, and in March 2025, 81,226 tonnes were exported — totaling 3,00,204 tonnes over these two months.
★ Australia exported 1,47,868 tonnes in February and 1,31,447 tonnes in March, totaling 2,79,315 tonnes.
★ Combined exports from both countries were 3,66,846 tonnes in February and 2,12,671 tonnes in March.
★ This indicates a decline of 1.54 lakh tonnes in lentil exports over the two months.
★ India is the largest buyer of lentils. However, in March, India was not among the top three importers of Canadian lentils, suggesting a significant drop in imports to India.
★ From October to December, India imported 2,94,655 tonnes out of Australia’s total 7,71,292 tonnes of lentils.
★ According to IGrain India, lentil exports from these countries may continue to decline in April and May. Large volumes were exported at the beginning of the season, and now both countries are witnessing shortages.
★ Sowing of the new crop has begun, which will take about 3 months to arrive.
★ In this scenario, the reduced exports could benefit lentil prices in Indian markets. Due to decreased imports, prices may rise.
★ Lentils have the highest percentage in terms of both consumption and import.
