Drop of 88,000 Hectares in Groundnut Sowing Area

New Delhi. The cultivation area for groundnut—a major oilseed crop of the Kharif season—reached 49.61 lakh hectares by September 4 this year; this is 83,000 hectares less than the sowing area of ​​50.44 lakh hectares recorded during the same period last year. Gujarat, the leading producer state for this oilseed, contributed the most to this decline. The area under cultivation there dropped by 1.38 lakh hectares—from 22.02 lakh hectares last year to 20.69 lakh hectares this year. Similarly, in Rajasthan—the second-largest producer state—the groundnut acreage reached only 11.24 lakh hectares, marking a decrease of 1.62 lakh hectares compared to the previous year's sowing area of ​​12.86 lakh hectares.

On the other hand, the cultivation area for groundnut has increased in some other states, including Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. In Maharashtra, the acreage improved from 1.35 lakh hectares to 1.40 lakh hectares, while in Telangana, it surged from 6,000 acres to 12,000 acres.
